Shock Absorption

The shock absorbing characteristics of natural rubber elastomers are partly due to the energy dissipating properties but also due to the damping properties which applies to either a single (shock) force acting on a mass or a cyclical force (vibration) acting on a system. In both cases, isolation requires resistance, as represented by the spring, and damping as represented by the dashpot in this diagram.
